What to Ask Before You Hire a Toronto Roofing Contractor

Getting your roof repaired or replaced is a big job and you want to make sure that it is done right. Once you have determined exactly what you want done and have an idea of your budget, you need to start looking for a Toronto roofing contractor to do the work for you.

Before you make your decision, make a point of getting estimates from more than one roofing contractor. It’s a good idea to have a list of questions prepared in advance so that you can compare the answers when making your choice. Before you sign a contract, you’ll want to know the answers to the following:

How long have you been in business?

If the company is a new one, ask how long the owner has been working in the roofing industry. Many roofing companies go out of business in their first 5 years.

Are your staff trained, licensed professionals?

You’ll want to be sure that everyone working on your roof has the right qualifications for the job. Ask to see a copy of their license.

Does the contractor use only quality materials on the job?

Cutting corners by using second-rate materials is not the way to go. You want to find a contractor that will use only first quality materials on your roof.

Do you carry workplace insurance and does your policy include liability coverage? Is your Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) certification current and up to date?

Ask to see a copy of the contractor’s WSIB certification. You can also call the WSIB office to confirm the company in question is up to date. Remember if there is an accident and the WSIB is not current you the homeowner are responsible.

Can I get contact information for a supervisor in case of any issues while the work is being performed?

If a roofing business has five or more workers, it must have a written health and safety policy. The company is also legally required to have a competent on-site supervisor who is trained and experienced. This person is responsible for safe work practices to protect workers from fall hazards.

Will the contractor provide written warranties for the labour and the materials?

Everything you discuss with the Toronto roofing contractor should be backed up in writing. If the contractor will provide a warranty, be sure to ask about its terms before you agree to have the work performed.
