What you Need to Know About Buying New Windows

If you are interested in buying new windows for your home, you need to start by doing your homework first. This is a major purchase and you’ll want to educate yourself so that you can make the best decision for your home.

Your windows not only let light into your house, but they should also filter out noise and shield it from the elements. You’ll want to choose a quality product that is energy efficient and that will keep you comfortable throughout the year.

Two Types of Window Replacements

If your original framing is in good shape and reasonably square, you can install a replacement window into the original opening and simply replace the sashes, side jambs and trim. By so doing you will lose some of your glass area and may still have cold air entering from around the frame. However, if the original frame has rotted or is out of square, you will need to buy a new construction window. This is a more expensive option but definitely the best way to go to optimize both your glass area and energy efficiency.

Choose Windows that Match your Homes Style

When you are looking for new windows for your home, it’s important to choose a product that matches your home’s style and quality. It doesn’t make sense to choose high-end, luxury windows if the rest of your home doesn’t match that look. You want the windows you choose to blend in with your home’s architecture and the other homes on your street.

Standard or Custom Windows?

If you can get windows to fit your openings off the shelf in standard sizes, you will pay less than if you need to buy custom sizes with upgrades, such as non-standard glass types, between the glass blinds and shades, and premium screens. The extra cost can be worth it: triple-paned glass can save you money on energy costs and to keep a room cool that gets direct sunlight.
