What You Need to Know About Choosing Shingles

Replacing the roof on your home is a big expense, and you want to make sure that you do it right. Asphalt shingles are easy to install and the most economical choice. Before you choose your shingles, you’ll want to consider a number of factors so that you make the right buying decision.

What to Consider When Buying Shingles

  • Slope of the Roof

The slope (or pitch) of your roof will determine the type of shingles you should be considering. If the roof has a low slope (4:12 – 4 inches of rise to 12 inches of roof), three-tab shingles are the best option. Low-slope roofs are more likely to have ice and water problems; you’ll need to choose a shingle that is water-resistant.

For a roof with an average slope of more than 6:12 or a high-slope roof (8:12-12:12), you would be looking at architectural shingles. Asphalt shingles should not be installed on a roof with a slope of less than 2:12.

  • Appearance of the Shingles

If your roof is visible from the street, you will need to consider how important its appearance is to you. There are a number of models offered on the market; they are available at different grades and in various colours.

Manufacturers have made a point of improving their products to make them more resistant to strong winds and water. Not all types can cover the crest and ridges on your roof; in that instance, you will need to buy a three-tab shingle in a coordinating colour to complete the job.

  • Warranty

Before choosing shingles for your home, be sure to check the warranty. Depending on the manufacturer and quality level, you may be able to buy a product with a lifetime limited warranty. Other manufacturers offer a 20, 25, or 30 year warranty on their products. This warranty will give you a better level of protection against damage caused by strong winds (up to 220 km/hour).
