FASCIA
The fascia is an architectural term for the band situated vertically and running horizontally under a roof edge. In much simpler terms, it is a roof trim, or the front board along the line of your roof. It consists of sheet metal or wooden boards. If you picture the vertical finishing edge that is connecting the ends of the rafters, trusses, as well as the area where the gutter attaches to the roof.
The main function of fascia is to protect. It acts as a layer between the elements of the outdoors (especially water) and the edge of the roof. It protects the interior of your building from weather damage since it blocks its entrance into the structure. It also plays an aesthetic role because it creates a smooth appearance for the edge of your roof. Be sure to look for signs of damage or rot because moisture is the number one enemy of fascia.
SOFFIT
The word soffit is derived from the French word for ‘formed as a ceiling’, the Latin term for ‘to fix underneath’. So, can you guess where your soffit is located? You know the exposed surface underneath the overhanging section of roof eave? Or the finished surface below the rafters and the fascia? That is the soffit. It plays a major role in helping to ventilate the attic as well as prevent rot in the rafters and sheathing. Most soffits are made from vinyl because not only is it water-resistant, it is also a cost-effective material. It helps in regulating the temperature in the attic and throughout the rest of your home, making it a more comfortable place to live in. You should look for holes, cracks, and rotting to avoid an easy entrance for insects and small animals, or water.
FLASHINGS
Do you ever wonder about the roof components used to seal roof system edges, walls, perimeters, drains, valleys, and other areas where the roof covering is terminated or interrupted? These components are what you call flashings. The primary function of flashing is to help close any voids in the roof system where water might enter, making these the prime areas for leak causes if you do not check them on a regular basis.
