Choosing the perfect roofing contractor who will install your roofing professionally is as important as using quality materials. While it is true that most roofing contractors are reliable experts, there are still some inexperienced roofers that are looking for unknowing or willing customers who will trust them.
This is why we have put together this guide to arm you with the most important questions to ask a potential roofing contractor before signing anything with them.
GENERAL ROOFING CONTRACTOR QUESTIONS
Question 1: How long has your company been in business?
You want your roofer to tell you that they have “seen it all” (installed and repaired hundreds of roofs like the ones you have). It is a great thing if the owner of the company has at least 10 years in the roofing business as the owner, or at minimum working as a team leader for someone else.
Question 2: Are you licensed roofers? Can I have a copy of your license?
When roofers apply for their license, they are required to demonstrate knowledge and adherence to building codes and even a proof of insurance.
Question 3: What happens if a roofer falls off my roof or damages my home? Does the company provide workers’ compensation and liability insurances?
Workers’ compensation insurance covers all employees in the event that they become injured on the job. Without it, an injured worker will more likely sue the homeowner to cover lost wages, medical bills and other damages.
Liability insurance, on the other hand, covers the homeowner in case the roofing company damages the home or the property.
Question 4: What will happen if you skip out on the job? Are you bonded, and if yes, will you provide me with a copy?
A surety bond is a form of insurance which covers the homeowner financially in the event that the contractor fails to complete their work or if they fail in some parts of the project.
Question 5: Can you provide me with at least three or four references?
Calling the references after your contractor answers questions 1 through 4 can help you decide which roofing contractor is best to work with. Ask the references whether they recommend working with the contractor, if the team respected their property, cleaned up thoroughly when the project was done, and if the final cost was the actual price quoted.
