Have you ever woken up one cold morning to find water dripping down the window panes of your room? A lot of people initially blame the windows. The truth is it might be the activities that you do at home that are causing the condensation, including air drying washing, showering or bathing, and many more.
This is pretty common. When cold weather starts to kick in, most homeowners have to deal with condensation or its aftermath which is actually worse – mould. However, having some neat tricks up your sleeves can easily help you win your battle against condensation.
The activities mentioned above can cause the air in your home (which already carries moisture) to be saturated. When the air cools down and can’t hold the water vapour, it would condense onto non-absorbent surfaces like mirrors and windows. However, that is the only part you see. What you might fail to notice is that this moisture can also get absorbed by your carpets or even your walls. As time passes, this moisture can start problems, especially when it turns into a breeding space for moulds.
Don’t worry too much, though. We have some tips for you on how you can prevent condensation:
- Keep extractor fans in your bathrooms and kitchen. They have to be strong enough to extract enough for the size of the room you are installing them in.
- Your furniture should not touch the walls. Nothing is more unpleasant than moving your favourite furniture from the wall only to discover that you are unknowingly breeding black mould.
- Stop drying clothes over radiators. Aside from releasing high amounts of water vapour, this unsafe habit can start a fire, too.
- Try using a condenser tumble dryer. Alternatively, you can simply ensure that the space around your tumble dryer is well-vented and gets enough airflow.
- Keep yourself from opening the windows to try removing or lessening condensation when it’s cold and wet outside as this will only increase humidity and condensation. If the weather is nice, then you can ventilate your home for a short period of time during the day. However, you should always maintain a constant temperature indoors by insulating your home properly.
