DIY Home Projects to Do with the Family

When you are having some work done in or on your house, you probably do not like the idea of having your children running all around. It is natural to think that the best course of action is to send them out on play dates, or perhaps let them take their toys to the yard to play with. But if you just always send them away, they are missing out on a lot of learning opportunities that could be beneficial for them in the future. So why not teach them, monitor them closely, and let them help you get your work done in less time, too?

Here are some DIY home projects that you can do with your kids:

DRAIN CLEANING

It is important that your children know how the drains work. More importantly, they should also know the ‘first aid’ when you have lightly clogged drains. You do not have to use chemicals every time there is a problem with the drains. What you can do is create a paste made of baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt. This is a formulation that is safe for kids and proven effective, too! Instruct your child to pour the mixture down your drains. What you need to do is to follow it up with a kettle of boiling water. Leave it for about half an hour, then ask your little one to run tap water through the drains to finish the job.

MAILBOX REVAMPING

Due to the harsh elements it is exposed too, your mailbox can look beaten in a year or two. Why not allot an afternoon to giving your mailbox a makeover? First, you can clean it using water, mild soap, and sponge to thoroughly remove debris. Only after it is cleaned will you see its true state, and whether or not it needs repainting, a new number, or some new decorations. You can allow your kids to take care of it all, or have each member of a family paint something on the mailbox so you’ll all have your contribution.

WALL PAINTING AND STENCILING

If you have older kids, this can be a fun activity to do. You can paint the walls first. Then you can have your kids use stencils to create different wall designs. You can also just let them paint whatever they want, like flowers, smiley faces, clouds, and more.

Whatever activity it might be, big or small, you can always choose to involve your children. Doing so will teach them not only practical lessons that they can use later in life, but also the value of taking care of your home.
