In Design – Home Trends For 2016

Design is always about form and function, but home design and build trends for 2016 really focus on liveable design that is also fun. From bright, bold colour to the natural touch, these trends veer away from the perfectly polished interiors we used to read about in magazines, and towards living spaces you could actually see yourself living in.

Colour Story
Though Pantone has yet to release their famed colour of the year (unfortunately we have to wait until December for that), Benjamin Moore has named Simply White as their top hue for 2016.

Like the name says, this crisp colour is simple, elegant, and still edgy, easily as striking on its own as it is an accompaniment of a more boisterous colour palette. The beautiful thing about white is its versatility – it works in every room. Watch for white-on-white kitchens popping up in new home design trends, white cabinets, counter tops and trim, with industrial textures and elements as counter-balance.

Where Benjamin Moore opts for simplicity, Behr’s colour palette for 2016 is anything but, offering lots of rich, deep colour that draws inspiration from across the globe. Take a look at their multicultural hues here.

Smarter Homes
We’re already on the smart home bandwagon (read up on the gadgets we think you should have in your home here) and home design in 2016 is championing the trend, as advances in technology are all about making life at home easier. You can expect more smart home products that have a focus on solving problems related to safety, security, or in-home convenience to become available.

Sustainable Living
The trend for more sustainable living continues into 2016, and even builders are getting in on the game. More and more home owners, designers and builders are making a conscious effort to put thought and care into the materials they select for their homes, opting for organic, recycled and up-cycled products that are kinder on the environment.

Natural + Contemporary
Following the desire to go more “green,” incorporating more natural elements into the design and build of a house continues to be popular for 2016. They call it the “softer side of modern design”, where contemporary and industrial materials blend seamlessly with natural materials, like steel, glass and wood.

Extending Your Living Beyond The Walls
Year round, Canadians love to spend time on the deck, patio or backyard and whether a home in the city, suburbs or the country the trend to create a space that provides access to nature during the normal day-to-day is on the rise.
