Knowing when it’s better to repair your windows or replace them altogether can be tricky to navigate. Here are some of the most common issues that you may be experiencing with your windows and our recommendation of whether to repair or replace them.
My Windows Are Drafty
If your windows are drafty, in many cases a repair will do the trick. It’s likely that your windows just need to be re-caulked or have the weather stripping replaced. Doing so can help you save on your energy bills and increase your home comfort levels.
In other cases, it may be that your windows weren’t installed properly, have warped over time, or have simply reached their end of life. If this is the case, we recommend installing new windows.
My Window Caulking Is Dry Or Cracked
Dry or cracked window caulking can be replaced and is usually a relatively quick and minor repair. We recommend hiring a professional to do this for you to ensure that it’s done correctly and looks clean and professional.
There Is Condensation On My Windows
In most cases, condensation on your windows is not a problem at all. This actually means that your windows are doing their job!
Condensation is likely to occur when your home’s humidity levels are high or when the window is cooler than the air inside the room. This can happen with changes in the weather, after a hot shower, and when cooking in the kitchen.
There are some adjustments that you can make to help reduce condensation on your windows.
- Turn on exhaust fans
- Install or adjust your home’s humidification system
- Move your houseplants to different areas of your home
Condensation Between Panes of Glass
If you are seeing condensation between the panes of glass inside your windows, this is, unfortunately, a larger issue. Moisture between your window panes can lead to mould and damage and is an indication that it’s time to replace your windows.
My Windows Are Warped
If your windows are warped, it’s time to replace them. Over time, warped windows will cause vinyl frames to become brittle, crack, and break.
Windows are an integral part of your home’s curb appeal, energy efficiency, and your family’s comfort. If your windows are passed their prime, don’t wait for an emergency to repair or replace them.
