Patio doors are a popular feature for modern homes. They provide access from the kitchen, family room or a bedroom to a deck or directly to the back yard while allowing a high level of natural light to enter your home. Older style patio doors were not known for being very energy efficient or especially secure, but modern doors are much better products. Swing doors operate in a similar fashion but are hinged. Making a choice about which is best for your space will require some thought, since each style has a distinct look.
Sliding Patio Door
Sliding patio doors are a very popular choice among homeowners. They allow a lot of natural light to enter the home and are very easy to maintain.
A sliding door is made up of two or more panels. At least one of the panels slides back and forth on hidden rollers. The sliding panels can be combined with fixed panels to create a broad sheet of glass to make a dramatic impact.
Panels slide parallel to the wall so they don’t interfere with furniture placement or walking areas. If space in your backyard or patio area is at a premium, you may want to consider having a sliding patio door installed.
Swing Patio Door
A swing patio door operates in the manner as a standard exterior door. They are full view glass panels and hang in pairs. The doors are center hung and are hinged on either side of a vertical bar in the center (a mullion) and open up in the same manner as butterfly wings.
You can also get a French door style. This type is hinged at the side jambs so that the panels meet when they are closed. The latching mechanism is in a wooden moulding mounted to one of the doors. When the French doors are open, the entire area between the hinges is clear.
A swing patio door would be a good option when you don’t have room for a sliding door or you have plenty of space on your patio area.
