What is the Difference Between a New Construction Window and a Replacement Window?

When you are going shopping for windows, you’ll need to know the difference between a new construction window and a replacement window. Once you understand how they differ, you’ll find it much easier to find exactly what you are looking for.

New Construction Windows

New construction windows are used for brand new structures or additions to existing ones. They may also be used on existing homes if major renovations are being performed which means the walls are being stripped down to the studs.

These windows come in standard sizes only and are available in several materials, including fibreglass, vinyl, and wood.

Replacement Windows

Replacement windows are designed to replace most, but not all, elements of an existing window. They are smaller and do not come equipped with nailing fins to attach the window to the side of the house.

The existing window frame is kept in place and the replacement window is fitted into it. The glass area of the replacement window will end up being slightly smaller than the original one.

Replacement windows are generally made with vinyl or fiberglass. Wood replacement windows are also available, but are a more expensive option.

When to Use New Construction or Replacement Windows

  • If you’re building a new home….

Use new construction windows. Replacement windows are not the right choice, since there is nothing to replace.

  • If you’re building an addition to your home….

Use new construction windows. This is like new construction, unless you are incorporating part of an existing wall into the addition, so you would treat it like a brand new construction project.

If you are replacing a window and the framing is still in good condition you can simply replace the window especially if you have unique to expensive interior trim or casings that can’t be replaced.

That said it is generally recommended to still tear out the frame on all older homes as there is usually very little to no insulation around the perimeter.

You’re going to end up doing a lot of carpentry work if the frame is rotted, falling apart or has sustained termite damage, so it will be just as easy to install a new construction window. This style will provide better insulation from the elements, too.
