One way to update your home and give it a new look is to buy a new patio door. If your existing door is no longer working properly and you want to change its look (and add value to your home at the same time), consider a new door this spring. With so many people using their back yard and patio areas as an additional room for entertaining once the warmer weather comes, it can be an important feature when family and friends come to visit.
What you Need to Know Before you Buy a Patio Door
Door Styles
- Sliding Patio Doors
This style of door is extremely popular. Available as single slider (right or left operator) and double slider (both panels open), this type of door allows plenty of natural light to enter a space. Sliding doors can be combined with fixed panels to create a broad wall of glass and really open up a large area, making it a great choice if you are overlooking flower beds, an attractive patio area or a pool. Since the panels slide parallel to the wall, they don’t interfere with furniture placement or traffic in either your room or the outdoor space.
Before you choose a sliding patio door, you will need to decide whether you want the door to open on the right or the left-hand side. You can also choose to have a double slider, where both panels open.
- Wide Sash Patio Doors
Wide sash patio doors look similar to sliding patio doors and comes with a 4 1/2” wide stiles and rails sash. This system is available in three and four panels for a customized look. A matching transom and side lites are also available.
- Swinging Patio Doors
This style operates in the same manner as a standard exterior door. The doors have full glass panels and often hang in pairs. They are center hung and hinged on either side of a central mullion so that they open like butterfly wings. You can also choose to have a single swinging door open to your deck or patio area with one or more fixed panels around it.
